How Board Members Implement an Annual Plan

Once your board has an annual planning meeting there are more steps to follow to implement the plan into action.

The ED and board chair now need to "shepherd" the plan through. Whatever didn’t get finished at the retreat must be finished by a team, usually the Executive Director and the board chair. They work together and write up the annual plan.
Some combination of members from the finance committee, the treasurer, the executive director, the bookkeeper, or the planning committee must work through a budget to put the plan into action, and negotiate any “realities” that surface.
Input about the annual plan from key staff member or volunteers should be obtained. This may result in modifications.
The board then approves the final version and communicates it to all interested parties, via newsletter, staff meetings, etc. In a small or medium size organization this entire process shouldn’t take more than two months; The annual plan should be completed, with the budget attached, ready for the new fiscal year.
