Long Range or Strategic Planning for Boards
Long range or strategic planning is not something every organization needs. The purpose is to answer the question, "What should we look like 3-5 years from now? What should we be accomplishing?” Some advantages of long range or strategic planning is that it gives the organization a chance to dream, to look at critical problems and issues, and to build teamwork among the board and the ED. This might be a way to get better results because goals are clearer and more focused at the end of the process. The written long-range plan is often a good tool to share the vision with potential donors and get them excited too. Some drawbacks to long range or strategic planning is that it takes time, energy, resources. Without the right leadership, the process can get bogged down, lose focus, and members can become frustrated. If key people aren’t all drawn completely into the process, there may no sense of “ownership” within the leadership and the plan ends up sitting on the shelf. Keep in mind that a long range plan should never be viewed as being "set in concrete." New legislation (Title V, for example), or new research or trend, or Lord’s unexpected blessings/opportunities may very well come along.
