The Board Members Calling
We all have callings in life. Some start as a seemingly tiny desire or passion and develop into a significant aspect of our life, such as a calling to intercessory prayer, evangelism, ministry to the poor or teaching. Others start circumstantially and grow into emotional and life-long commitments-parenting, mentoring, leadership or making and distributing wealth to further the cause of Christ. In either sense, there is a sense of significance, weightiness and kingdom value to every calling. Rarely do I find board members who believe their participation on a board is a calling. In many cases, these individuals were recruited to the board to fill a vacancy or lend their name or reputation to the organization. Others may have been asked to join based on their generosity and financial support. It is true that a board must have credibility and funding. But it seems that the way in which a member is recruited will most likely determine the way in which he or she will serve. God has placed many noble, courageous and transcendent plans on individual’s hearts that will never succeed without the guidance, accountability, resources and enthusiasm of others. St. Augustine once said, “Without God, we cannot; without us, God will not.” Serving on a board is a noble and worthy calling – one not to be taken lightly. Whether you join a board due to your passion or circumstances, it is crucial that you have sense of calling for your participation. It is a ministry that will demand your heart, intellect time and dependency on God. Simply put, it requires your all.
