Preparing for Unexpected Events
When my phone rang at 1:00 a.m., I somehow knew it wasn't good news. As I listened, I learned my center director had been tragically killed in a car accident. As the Executive Director, it was my job, not only to console the staff, but also to make sure the center continued to serve the clients. If a director experiences sickness, a family tragedy, or even commits a moral violation, it can affect the daily operations. Because it is critical to assume the responsibilities of the center, the board should create a “succession” policy that will continue the work of the ministry. Boards can protect the organization by preparing and monitoring a policy similar to this: In order to protect the board from sudden loss of Executive Director's services, the Executive Director shall designate and inform the board of the individuals who will be familiar with board and administrative issues and processes. Periodically, the board should make it a point to confirm that someone besides the Executive Director is up to date. Not only will this protect the organization, it provides peace of mind during times of catastrophe.
