If We Are Short of Funds for a Project, What Is the Reason?
All boards have likely been in this position: We want to fund a project, but the funds are simply not there. Why not? We need to know the answer—and that answer will likely be one of those below. 1. God is saying "No." Simply put, we've missed God! If we don't have the funding for something, perhaps we need to ask Him whether we've missed the makr and we are outside of His will. 2. God is saying, "Wait." Perhaps the funds are coming, and we need to wait on Him. However, let's remember that many boards "rest" in this and refuse to move forward. God may be saying to wait, but let's make sure we have prayed through and know this for sure. 3. We need to step out in faith. It's quite possible that the funding is there, but we are not out discovering where to find it. Again, we must seek God first. But, as a board, are we talking to those who could fund the project? Are we giving the staff the tools to conduct an effective development plan? 4. We don't have a plan. Coinciding with #3, if we don't have a plan, we need to pray through and create one—probably with a consultant. If we needed to draw up architectural plans for a new building, we would hire an architect. Why is it that when it comes to conducting fundraising events and putting together development plans, many boards say, "We can do it ourselves?" There are professionals who know how to do this. Bring them in and learn from them--it will be one of the wisest investments a board can make. 5. We're not executing the plan. We start with great ideas at times, but fail to follow through. Let's make sure we are sticking to the plan--or changing if necessary. 6. People just won't give. This is a trick answer. If God is saying, "No," or "Wait," He is in the process of funding the vision He has given you. If some refuse Him and say "No," He has the power of raising up those who will say, "Yes." If we are saying that people just won't give, we need to take a fresh look at reasons 1 through 5.
