Walt Disney called his form of planning "Imagineering." It was his way of taking away the limits and dreaming of what could be. A wise board is one that partakes in "Imagineering" also, because our mission is one of epic implications. As a board, our decisions will impact lives and - if we can imagine this - change an entire culture. As our ministry touches hearts, lives are changed and lives are saved. In the process, we are turning our culture toward one that truly celebrates life. The seven letters of the word "Imagine" however, give us several characteristics of board membership. Each comes together to form a picture of our role in the ministry: Implement sound parameters for ministry operations. The board makes sure our I's are dotted and our T's crossed, with employee manuals, operations policies and good accounting practices. Measure progress by creating tangible goals and objectives. It's not enough for a board to say, "We need more volunteers." As a board, let's come up with a reasonable number we would like to reach and work toward that goal, providing the tools (See "G") the executive director needs to reach that goal. Advance a clear vision for the ministry's near-term and long-term future. What do we want to be by this time next year? In five years? A board puts this on paper and tracks progress and each board meeting. A strong board seeks the Generate tools for success. Do we need more funding? The board finds those tools, whether it be another staff member or needed training, and puts those tools in the hands of the executive director and staff. Influence the community on behalf of the ministry. A board member brings influence, whether in a Sunday school class, the business world or in other endeavors. The effective board is the ministry's cheerleader, sharing ministry successes with those around them. This influence brings the ministry needed church, financial and volunteer support. Navigate the ministry through spiritual battles. Ours is one of the most spiritually challenging ministries in the kingdom and the board needs to build the ministry through prayer and a clear understanding of the ministry's total dependence on God. Encourage all staff with practical, emotional and spiritual support. The board's one employee is the executive director, but can encourage all paid and volunteer staff through recognition, celebration, fellowship and other forms of support. This creates a winning atmosphere that strengthens the ministry even in the most difficult times. If you have a question for Speaker and Publisher Kirk Walden, contact him at kirk.walden@comcast.net
