Before We Talk To a Prospective Board Member . . .

One of the biggest mistakes we in pregnancy care ministry can make is not properly vetting potential board members.

There are many people with a wonderful heart for the ministry, but that does not always translate into a great board member. While the right heart and a commitment to the Lord are both vital; those are the first of many traits we need in a strong leader who will serve as a board member. Here are a few more:

A financial commitment to the ministry
Someone who is not currently giving to the ministry can do many things for the ministry—but serving on the board is not one of them. A board is not a place for just the "big donors," but unless someone has shown a desire to give—at a level commensurate with his or her income level—it is nearly impossible for that person to invite others to give. In addition, it is wiser to entrust financial decisions to those who understand the perspective of a financial partner. Only those who give have that perspective.

A background of leadership
Look for the board member who understands leadership and has experience in making the tough calls. While it is not unheard of for a board to bring in a younger member in order to mentor that person toward future leadership, it is a risk and each board needs to weigh this carefully. Does a prospective board member know how to make a key hire? And, can this person make the decision to terminate someone if necessary?

A circle of influence
We want our board members to influence those around them to be a part of the ministry, either financially or as volunteers. Without a circle of influence, this critical aspect of board membership can't take place. A circle of influence can be a church group, business associates or simply a large circle of friends and acquaintances. We're not looking for the most popular person in town; but we do want someone who reaches out to others.

A clear understanding of the commitment involved
Unfortunately, some of the best board candidates are those who are already committed elsewhere. We need those people who will look at the commitment to our ministry as second only to their local church when it comes to Christian service. We avoid conflicts of interest ("Oh, I can't be a part of this fundraising event because I'm doing something with so and so the same month"). We also avoid the possibility that someone will see their membership as an honorary—not working—position. Let's lay out the commitment (meetings, events, etc.) clearly before anyone says "Yes."

If we take our time vetting our candidates, we strengthen our board. At times it means we may have to wait for the right person or persons to come along, but we rarely–if ever–find ourselves with one who cannot fulfill the responsibilities of membership. Let's choose wisely. Our future depends on it.
