| "Greater works than these . . . ?"
Truly, truly, I saw to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to the father. John 14:12 When Jesus tells us that we will do "greater works than these," let's honestly ask ourselves, Do I really believe him? When we consider all that Jesus did, who are we to believe that we can actually perform such things? As an example, how many of us have gone to the tomb of a lost friend and called him forth, as Jesus did with Lazarus? Anyone? Yet driving down the highway the other day on the way to a speaking engagement I was captured by the thought of "greater works than these" and our ministry. My pastor recently taught on this verse – John 12:4 – as "the verse no one believes." His words got me thinking, Do I truly believe this verse? He cited Paul, who did "greater works" than Jesus as he took the gospel throughout the known world – to more people than even Jesus did – as a prime example. And as I continued my drive I thought about our ministry and all that happens here. Here – in the pregnancy help center – we see people change their minds about Jesus Christ and choose to follow him. This sounds like quite a work to me, when we consider that those who are in Christ inherit the gift of eternal life. Not only this, but here – in the pregnancy help center – women and men who come in convinced they will end a pregnancy and the life of a child change their minds as well. Every time this happens, a child's destiny changes, from death to life. The center where I was headed tells me that in 2009 they conservatively estimate that 132 women considering ending their pregnancies chose life. One hundred and thirty two ... About every other day during 2009 then, a child's future changed from death to life. While the raising of Lazarus was more dramatic (and with good reason; Jesus was trying to make a point: That his father always hears him; that people would see he was sent from God – John 11:36 – one can make the case that saving the lives of innocent children is an amazing work. This isn't written to somehow compare our work with the raising of Lazarus. The two are markedly different, both in method and in purpose. Still, think with me. When we read about "greater works than these," – and we watch the power of God turn a heart toward life – can't we at least envision a smile on Jesus' face as he considers his words, recorded in John 14:12?
