Abortion Statistics-Who and Why?

Heartlink Article Image The U.S. Supreme Court has given women the right to choose. The ruling, known as Roe vs. Wade , which gave women the right to decide whether or not to bear children reads as follows:
We recognize the right of the individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted governmental intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the decision whether to bear or beget a child. That right necessarily includes the right of a woman to decide whether or not to terminate her pregnancy . . ."

— United States Supreme Court, January 22, 2023

Who has abortions?
  • Each year, over one million women choose abortion.
  • College-age women account for nearly one-third of all abortions.
  • More than half of all abortions are performed on women 25 years or younger.
  • Two-thirds of women who have abortions have never been married.
  • Less than one percent of abortions are for cases of rape. (Source: Alan Guttmacher Institute, "Facts in Brief: Induced Abortion," 2002)
The top five reasons women choose abortion:
  • Can't afford the baby right now
  • Not ready for the responsibility of parenthood
  • Concern about how a baby would change their lives
  • Problems with relationship/desire to avoid single parenthood
  • Too young, or not mature enough to have a child
(Source: “Why Do Women Have Abortions?” Family Planning Perspectives, July/August 1988.)
These reasons comprise 81 percent of the abortion choices — or one million abortion decisions each year.
