Why Adoption is an Important Option
Adoption numbers have plummeted in recent years, and yet, a RAND study shows that "relinquishment results in better outcomes for the birthmother, including delayed marriage, increased likelihood of employment six and twelve months after the birth and greater likelihood of living in a higher-income household." Adoption is better for the birthmother and it's better for the child! So why are we often reluctant to promote it? Additional adoption research conducted in 2000 by the Family Research Council revealed common misunderstandings and a lack awareness about adoption related issues. Negative attitudes shared by clients and counselors also came to light. Specifically, the Family Research Council identified the "Three Big Lies:"
Those familiar with adoption know the first two of those are false, and the third one doesn't have to be. Placing a child for adoption is never easy, but it can be done when the larger concern is what's best for my child, not what will make ME the happiest. It takes maturity to focus on the greater good, rather than desiring personal pleasure.
