A Day in the Life of a Director

article image Some days are better than others here are at the center. In just the past two days I've seen so much damage to the human soul. I've come to realize we cannot be careless in our words or actions to our children, for these mold and shape them for all eternity. To undo the damage that can be done to a child is like trying to change the direction of a stream from flowing down to flowing up.

There are two clients that have triggered this urge in me to be the best parent I can be and to encourage you as well. The first young woman is a product of an alcoholic father, and a mother who has always been hooked on pills. She came to be part of the foster care system. She lives with whomever will take her at the time.

She had a positive pregnancy test. She's on probation and can't find a job. I sit and think, "How in the world can I help her? How in an hour visit do I even begin to help her?"

When I talk to her of change, she says that she has no intention of leaving the only two people in her life (at this time) to be alone. I feel this passion for her-a desire for her to know Christ, to really know the life-changing Christ. She told me she wrote my name down and believes that I care.

The other young woman was adopted and says she has a great life. She's glad her birth mother didn't abort her. Yet when she found out last year she was five months pregnant, her adoptive parents took her out of state to abort her baby. Now she comes to us a year later and receives another positive test. She wants desperately to keep this child. She said she needs an army to go with her to tell her parents. I told her God is the only army she needs, that He can do far more for her than I could ever hope to do. I offered her our parenting classes, which she is eager to begin. I gave her a brand new diaper bag, a Bible and a hug.

Seeing damage to the human soul is commonplace in a day in the life of a pregnancy help center director. "Undoing the damage" is a challenge for all of us, and it can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task. When I see so many clients who have been injured emotionally and spiritually by their parents, more and more I am motivated to be the best parent I can possibly be to my own children.
