Fetal Development Stages

From conception to 22 weeks, here is a series of photos depicting the various phases of the fetal development cycle.

Conception-Day 1

On day 1 the sperm joins with the ovum (egg) to form one cell that is smaller than a grain of salt.

Fetal Development at 8 Weeks

At 8 weeks, the baby's heart is beating.

Fetal Development at 12 Weeks

At 12 weeks, the preborn baby will make a tight fist with its hand when its palm is stroked.

Fetal Development at 16 Weeks

A 16-week preborn baby's ears are now functioning so he or she can listen to the mother's voice and heartbeat. At this age the baby reacts to loud noises.
