Baby Bottle Boomerang

As part of an overall capital campaign last year, Piedmont Women's Center in Greenville, South Carolina launched a very successful baby bottle promotion. Our goal was to raise $100,000 through a combination of major donor gifts, a direct mail appeal letter and the distribution of baby bottles through our local churches. With the funds raised from the campaign, we could purchase three ultrasound machines for our three centers to enable us give free ultrasounds to abortion-vulnerable clients.

We began the campaign the first week in April 2000 with a direct mail letter to a database of 8,000 names.
We ordered 1,500 baby bottles and delivered them to church liaisons the week of April 17 for distribution to church congregations on Easter Sunday, April 23.

As word of the ultrasound program began to filter through the community, donors began calling and offering to help purchase the machines. Two donors eventually stepped forward to donate approximately $25,000 each, enough to purchase two of the machines.
By the middle of July, exactly 100 days after the campaign began, we reached the following financial milestones:

Amount raised from baby bottles: $30,000
Amount raised from appeal letter: $20,000
Amount raised from major donors: $60,000
Total raised for program $110,000

Because of the success of our capital campaign, we were able to purchase three new machines, supplies and hire two part-time nurses to implement the ultrasound program.

As director of development for Piedmont Women's Center, I want to stress that credit for the campaign's success belongs to God alone. He gave inspiration for the baby bottle promotion and the appeal letter. He touched the hearts of our donors and motivated them to give generously to His ministry.

Out of this fundraising campaign, we founded "Plans for You," a ministry formed to help pregnancy care centers with fundraising, communications and administration.

The "wee witness" bottle has a cartoon style drawing of a small child on one side with a caption and a scripture verse on the other. Church members enjoy receiving the bottle because it so beautifully portrays the heart of the ministry.
