Hannah

Drew and I were 20-year-old, unmarried college students — and pregnant. We first found out we were going to be parents on Valentine's Day. As you can imagine, we were in complete shock. We were scared and did not know what to do or where to turn.

When I went to the Pittsburg State University Student Health Center to get another test done, they told us about Vie Medical Clinic. I came home and talked to Drew about what we should do. Drew kept saying over and over again, "We cannot afford this baby, we cannot afford ourselves, and we have to get rid of it!" I wanted to keep the baby, but after a few weeks of hearing those same comments over and over, I started to think that Drew was right. Finally, I called Vie Medical Clinic to get an appointment.

When Drew and I arrived at Vie, we wanted to get information on abortions. As we waited in the waiting room, I tried to think about what my parents would say. Drew said that he just wanted to get everything over with. My counselor, Christi, called me back into a room, and another counselor, Jeff, talked with Drew. Christi and I talked about everything. She helped me be brave enough to tell my parents and gave me the support I needed. Drew said he talked with Jeff about many of the same things, as well as where Drew stood on certain issues.

We ended our first visit with an ultrasound. We could not see much, but the thought of a baby growing inside of me was amazing. At that point, I changed my mind. We set up our next appointment and left. In the car, Drew said he could not take the life of his child, and I completely agreed with him. It took us awhile, but we realized that Drew was looking at the fact of us having a baby in a material way — finances, late nights and all the diapers we would have to buy, while I was thinking about the fun times — the playing, all the firsts and having something that was part of you.

Our next two ultrasounds were the most amazing things we have ever seen in our lives! Each time we went back, our baby moved more and more — we were getting to watch her grow.

We are very thankful that Vie Medical Clinic was available for us to turn to. We appreciate the ultrasounds and the amazing positive support we received. Without Vie, we do not think we would have made the choices that we did or had the strength to tell our parents — we have no idea where we would be right now. We would like to thank everyone at Vie—all the volunteers and everyone who made Vie possible for parents like Drew and me. We thank God daily for leading us to Vie and for Vie being available to us.

Now that our wonderful baby girl is here, well, I really do not know what to say. She is wonderful and beautiful. We thank God daily that we did not go through with the abortion. We are glad that we were able to see her on the ultrasound before we made one of the most important decisions in our lives. I do not think that she would be here if we had not seen her on the ultrasound beforehand. It is so amazing that places like Vie Medical Clinic have access to the resources that they do, and that they are equipped with life saving equipment, like the ultrasound machines. We are very grateful and cannot express enough the happiness we feel now that our beautiful child is here and healthy.
