Elizabeth held in her hand a coupon for a free ultrasound that she'd received from Dr. Bo Machado in Charleston, South Carolina. She had visited his office and told him that she was determined to have an abortion. She already had two little boys at home – a 15 month old and a 4 year old – and she was overwhelmed with the circumstances of her life. Dr. Machado had posters in his office listing the services of Lowcountry Crisis Pregnancy Center and he gave Elizabeth the coupon for the free ultrasound and suggested that she pay them a visit. As the counselor spent time with Elizabeth, she listened to her concerns, provided Godly advice and shared the love and compassion of Jesus with her. During the counseling process, Elizabeth showed some interest in adoption and the counselor went to gather adoption information as the young mother prepared for her ultrasound. As Nancy, the nurse manager, began the ultrasound scan, she began to recognize signs of multiple gestation. As she continued with the ultrasound, she said, "Oh . . . oh my . . . girl, you have twins . . . oh my . . . there's THREE babies!" her voice rising an octave with the recognition of each little beating heart! Needless to say, Elizabeth was in shock, but as Nancy showed her each of the babies, she knew she had an important decision to make. She immediately replied, "I’m keeping my babies!" All Pregnancy Medical Clinics in the Option Ultrasound Program provide limited obstetrical ultrasound as medically indicated. Clinics are licensed to operate under the supervision of a physician, using only trained sonographers. Focus on the Family does not endorse the use of ultrasound outside of a medical clinic setting and does not endorse the use of ultrasound for non-medical reasons. Patient referrals are made to physicians for follow-up diagnosis and care as needed.
